Il ciclo di dottorato ha lo scopo di condurre lo studente a elaborare una tesi di ampio respiro e di alto livello scientifico, tale da poter essere pubblicata almeno in gran parte. Esso è quindi consigliato solo a coloro che abbiano dimostrato, nel corso della licenza, spiccate attitudini e interesse verso la ricerca scientifica.
Il ciclo di dottorato viene ritenuto concluso dopo quattro anni dall’iscrizione. Tale termine può essere prolungato per altri quattro anni per motivi eccezionali, con permesso scritto del Preside. In tal caso lo studente è iscritto come fuori corso. Dopo quattro anni di iscrizione come fuori corso (e quindi dopo otto anni dalla prima iscrizione), il curriculum degli studi non è più ritenuto valido.

After receiving the degree of License the students end their relationship with the institute. Any student who wishes to continue to the level of Doctorate must apply anew to the institute for admission to the doctoral program. To do this the student must:

1. After deciding on the topic for the doctorate and choosing a moderator from among the professors at the institute, make a request for admission to the doctoral program and arrange a meeting with the president.

2. In making his decision the president takes into consideration the topic chosen, the dossier presented, the performance of the candidate in the license program and the license thesis. The president will also take into consideration the language proficiency of the candidate.

3. On the basis of this documentation and after a dialogue with the student the president can give his consent for registration to be made in the Segreteria.
