The Institute of Pastoral Liturgy (ILP) was founded in 1966 by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Santa Giustina in Padua with the approval of the bishops of the Triveneto region for the formation of priests (both diocesan and religious), religious and laity in the liturgical and pastoral principles of the Second Vatican Council.
With a letter from the Congregation for Catholic Education dated 3rd January 1987, the ILP was incorporated into the theology faculty of the Pontifical Athenaeum of S. Anselmo in Rome and the title of its licence was established as Licenza in Sacra Teologia con specializzazione liturgico-pastorale.
The definitive coming of age of the institute occurred on 3rd September 1991 with the Congregation for Catholic Education issuing a double decree, which definitively recognised the full academic standing of the institute and its ability to confer the degree of doctor as Dottorato in Sacra Teologia con specializzazione liturgico-pastorale.
The incorporation into the Theology Faculty of S. Anselmo and the approval of the statutes are reviewed every five years. The last approval came from the Congregation on August 7th 2001.
